TAFM Greatly Honored: Prof. Karen Flegg, President of WONCA, Gave a Speech in person at TAFM Annual Conference in Taiwan
The Taiwan Association of Family Medicine (TAFM) was greatly honored to host Prof. Karen Flegg, president of WONCA, during her visit to Taiwan from July 10 to 14, 2025. On July 13, Prof. Flegg delivered a keynote speech at the TAFM Annual Conference, that was enthusiastically received by all attendees.
In her keynote address, "Family Medicine—Essential to Primary Care Transformation,” Prof. Flegg shared insights on the global transformation of family medicine. She emphasized the role of family doctors in health system reform and universal health coverage. She highlighted the spirit of the five-star doctor and the importance of implementing Planetary Health at grassroots level. Dr. Flegg praised Taiwan's initiatives such as "Healthy Taiwan 888 Program ".

Later that day, Prof. Flegg participated in the "Meet with the WONCA President" session hosted by Prof. Shao-Yi Cheng and WONCA APR President Brian Chang and engaged in thoughtful dialogue with family medicine residents. Young physicians brought up issues such as cross-strait medical relations and Taiwan’s international standing. Prof. Flegg encouraged them to participate in global health and become future leaders in primary care.

During her visit, Prof. Flegg visited the Lian An Clinic, the Department of Family Medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital, and the TAFM new hall. She also visited the National Palace Museum to experience Taiwanese culture. Prof. Flegg expressed her admiration for the professionalism and hospitality of Taiwan’s medical community.

This visit not only strengthened the partnership between WONCA and TAFM but also inspired many young doctors to engage in global health efforts and contribute to the sustainable development of family medicine worldwide.
