Association Historiography

  1. 1984. Preparation for the establishment of the R.O.C. (Republic of China) Association of Family Medicine was initiated in response to the active promotion of Dr. Hsieh, Hsien-Chen (president of Kaohsiung Medical College), Dr. Tom Gladfelter (KMC visiting professor) and other family medicine physicians.
  2. 1986/01. The journal “Primary Medical Care Bulletin” was published.
  3. 1986/03/01. The Association was formally established at KMC, electing Professor Hsieh, Wei-Chuan as its founding president and holding its inaugural convention and the first annual Family Medicine Symposium.
  4. 1986/05. Entrusted by the Department of Health (DOH, now the Ministry of Health and Welfare), the Association started and completed the certification of the departments of family medicine at 12 hospitals island-wide with President Hsieh and Managing Director Dr. Liu, Hong-Wen as the convenors of the certification committees respectively in north and south Taiwan.
  5. 1986/10. The Association launched its lasting collaboration with the Department of Family Medicine at National Taiwan University to host a continuing medical education program; 65 such programs have been organized and offered so far.
  6. 1987. The Association was appointed by the DOH to serve as the first professional association to take the helm of family medicine specialty certification examination and residency training program accreditation in Taiwan.
  7. 1988/02. Family medicine topped the list of the 18 major medical specialties announced by the DOH.
  8. 1988/03. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (for 2nd term) with Professor Hsieh, Wei-Chuan re-elected as the president of the Association.
  9. 1988/05/02. The Association became the 35 full member of WONCA (the World Organization of Family Doctors) under the name of Chinese Taipei Association of Family Medicine.
  10. 1988. The Association was honored with the Outstanding National Social Organization Award presented by the Ministry of the Interior for the 13th time.
  11. 1989/11/03~07. President Hsieh, Wei-Chuan led a delegation of over 40 members of the Association to attend the first International Conference on Primary Health Care in Beijing, China. This was the first time a Taiwanese medical association was approved to attend an international conference in the People’s Republic of China.
  12. 1990/03. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (3rd term) with Professor Tai, Tong-Yuan elected the president of the Association.
  13. 1990/07. The Association began its collaboration with Formosan Medical Association to edit the continuing education column of the bimonthly “Formosan Journal of Medicine.”
  14. 1991/3/13. The Association held a press conference to celebrate its fifth anniversary and promote the family physician system.
  15. 1991/03. “Chinese Journal of Family Medicine” was published.
  16. 1991/12/27. The Association moved into its present office located on Huai Ning Street, Taipei City.
  17. 1992/03. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (4th term) with Professor Tai, Tong-Yuan re-elected as the president of the Association.
  18. 1994/03. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (5th term) with Dr. Tsai, Shih-Tzu elected the president of the Association.
  19. 1994/05/27. The Association hosted the International Conference on Primary Health Care at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Experienced domestic experts and esteemed scholars from the UK, the US, Canada, Japan, and other foreign countries were invited to share their insights on the theme “Integration of Preventive Services into Primary Health Care.” Papers presented and suggestions discussed were edited into a white paper submitted to the DOH.
  20. 1994/06/15. The “R.O.C. Family Medicine Association Bulletin” was published to provide members with regular updates on association information and activities.
  21. 1994/07. The title of “Primary Medical Care Bulletin” was renamed into “Primary Medical Care.”
  22. 1995/03. President Tsai, Shih-Tze resigned and was succeeded by Dr. Huang, Mao-Hsiung.
  23. 1996/07. The Association published “Family Medicine,” the first family medicine textbook “indigenized” to meet the needs of Taiwan.
  24. 1998/07. Annual membership meeting was held at Taipei International Conference Center. Bylaws of the Association were amended to confirm its delegate model of representation that entrusted the supreme authority of the Association in the General Assembly of Members’ Representatives. Professor Chen, Ching-Yu was elected the president of the Association (6th term).
  25. 1999/03/6~10. The Association hosted the 10th WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Conference focusing on the theme of “Health for All by the Year 2000: Family Medicine—Meeting Old Challenges” and the Academic Seminar on Taiwan-China Cross-Strait Family Medicine and General Practice.
  26. 2000/06. The second edition of “Family Medicine” was published.
  27. 2000/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (7th term) with Dr. Chen, Tsung-Hsien elected the president of the Association.
  28. 2000/09. The official name of the Association was changed into “Taiwan Association of Family Medicine” (TAFM).
  29. 2002/04. The Association edited and published a series of “Fact Sheets of Family Medicine” providing family physicians with an effective tool for patient instruction and health education.
  30. 2002/06. Another indigenized textbook “Manual of Clinical Family Medicine” was published.
  31. 2002/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (8th term) with Professor Shieh, Ying-Hua elected the president of the Association.
  32. 2002/09/12~15. A delegation from the Macau Association of General Medicine visited the Association and had meetings with President Shieh, Ying-Hua, Professor Chen, Ching-Yu and other TAFM representatives to expedite academic exchange.
  33. 2003/03. A promotion film was produced to help the general public better understand the importance and benefits of the family physician system.
  34. 2004/01. The Association published “Preventive Healthcare: Physical Examination.”
  35. 2004/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (9th term) with Professor Chang, Chih-Jen elected the president of the Association.
  36. 2005/07/30~31. The Association hosted the first Cross-Strait Quadripartite Conference on Family Medicine and General Practice with experts and practitioners from Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan sharing experiences and contributing insights related to issues ranging from the future development of family medicine, the roles of family physicians in preventing emerging diseases, and the implementation and improvement of the family physician system to the applications of health management information system and the establishment of community medical service groups.
  37. 2006/06. The Association published the third edition of “Family Medicine” and the second edition of “Manual of Clinical Family Medicine.”
  38. 2006/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (10th term) with Professor Chang, Chih-Jen re-elected as the president of the Association.
  39. 2008/06. “Preventive Medicine” was added to the list of TAFM publications.
  40. 2008/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (11th term) with Professor Chiu, Tai-Yuan elected the president of the Association.
  41. 2008/07/12~13. The Association hosted the second Cross-Strait Quadripartite Conference on Family Medicine and General Practice with over 100 guests from Beijing, Hong Kong, and Macau joining experts and practitioners in Taiwan to discuss the promotion of the four-region collaboration for the development of family medicine, community primary care networks, and programs of community-based prevention of chronic diseases.
  42. 2009/04. The title of “Primary Medical Care” was renamed into “Family Medicine and Primary Medical Care.”
  43. 2010/03. The Association collaborated with Kuo Fan Cultural and Educational Foundation to take part in the post-Wenchuan earthquake reconstruction in China through singing letters of cooperation intent with the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China and the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Xian Jiaotong University to provide general practice training for medical care professionals in Mian Prefecture of Shaanxi Province.
  44. 2010/07. The Association published “The NHI (National Health Insurance) Plan for the Delivery of Integrated Care by Family Physicians: Empirical Study on Effectiveness and Policy Recommendations,” a policy white paper reviewing the strengths of the plan that had been implemented from 2003 to 2009 and identifying its areas of improvement.
  45. 2010/10. “Clinical Handbook for Adult Immunization” was compiled and published to provide family physicians with guidelines for practicing and promoting adult immunization.
  46. 2010/12. The third edition of “Manual of Clinical Family Medicine” was published.
  47. 2011/01. Working with the Red Cross Society, the Association continued the “General Practice Training Program for Mian Prefecture of Shaanxi Province by Taiwan Service Alliance for 512 Sichuan Earthquake Reconstruction,” which was renewed for a second year.
  48. 2011/04. The Association printed and distributed the World Family Doctor Day (05/19) posters to celebrate the special day and to promote the public image of family physicians.
  49. 2011/06. The Association published the policy white paper “Suggestions for the Future Development of Integrated Health Care Delivery System,” examining the current status and envisioning the future of the system from a broad spectrum of perspectives.
  50. 2011/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (12th term) with Professor Chiu, Tai-Yuan re-elected as the president of the Association.
  51. 2012/03. Working with the Red Cross Society, the Association implemented the third-year “General Practice Training Program for Mian Prefecture of Shaanxi Province by Taiwan Service Alliance for 512 Sichuan Earthquake Reconstruction.”
  52. 2012/03. “Clinical Handbook for Adult Preventive Health Care Services” was published to provide family physicians with guidelines for practicing and promoting preventive health care services for adults.
  53. 2012/04. A new version of World Family Doctor Day poster was designed and distributed to celebrate the special day and to promote the public’s recognition of the contribution of family physicians.
  54. 2012/07/01. The Association hosted a Japan-Korea-Taiwan Tripartite International Symposium discussing the promotion of family medicine and sharing the experience of resident training.
  55. 2012/07. The policy white paper “Strategies and Suggestions for Promoting Accountable Family Physician System and Implementing Capitation Payment Plan” was published, discussing how to adopt the accountable family physician system as the basis for developing a capitation payment plan meeting the specific needs of Taiwanese citizens through globalized perspectives, nationalized strategies, and localized actions.
  56. 2013/04/18. In addition to introducing a new poster, the Association celebrated the 519 World Family Doctor Day by holding a press conference in support of the HPA (Health Promotion Administration) Pilot Plan for Second-Generation Smoking Cessation Treatment, conveying to the general public the message of “making smoking cessation stress-free with the free assistance from your family doctor.”
  57. 2013/04. The Association updated its “Manual of Clinical Family Medicine” in the form of an expanded third edition.
  58. 2014/04. The Association introduced yet another new version of World Family Doctor Day poster highlighting the importance and contribution of family physicians.
  59. 2014/05/18. The TAFM-produced “The Day of a Family Doctor” had its premiere. The film represented the unwavering effort of the Association in promoting the family physician system and the public’s recognition of family medicine. The film portrayed family physicians as “good doctors next door” providing tailored primary care for every member of every family in the community. Underlining the core values of comprehensive, continuous, and integrated care, the film aimed at encouraging more citizens to utilize the services of family physicians and more medical students to practice family medicine in the future.
  60. 2014/06. The Association published the policy white paper “Educating and Training Accountable Family Physicians: Future Challenges,” accentuating the importance of meeting the needs of an increasingly aging society by providing both aspiring and practicing family physicians with comprehensive education and training focusing on the core values of patient-centered, whole-person care.
  61. 2014/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (13th term) with Professor Lee, Meng-Chih elected the president of the Association.
  62. 2015/03/04~08. The Association hosted the 21st WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Conference centering on the theme of “Family Medicine: New Horizons and Challenges” and the Academic Seminar on Taiwan-China Cross-Strait Family Medicine and General Practice.
  63. 2015/04. A new version of World Family Doctor Day poster was designed, printed, and distributed in celebration of the progress that has been made in family medicine, as well as in anticipation of the challenges that will be met in the future.
  64. 2015/05/18. The Association hosted the award presentation ceremony for its “My Family Doctor and I” essay writing contest; By inviting participants to share their experiences of interacting with family physicians, the contest aimed at promoting the public’s awareness of the value and contribution of family physicians and inspiring more medical students and residents to dedicate themselves to family medicine. The winning essays provided readers with a clear understanding of the motives driving the authors to utilize the medical services of their family physicians and shed light on the significant roles played by family physicians, including: champions of primary care, providers of convenient, comprehensive, continuous medical care, advocate of preventive health care, guardian against expensive and inefficient medical over specialization, gatekeeper for preventable hospitalization and ER visit, and, ultimately, cornerstone of effective healthcare and health insurance systems.
  65. 2015/08. TAFM President Lee, Meng-Chih was elected the new president (2016~2018) of WONCA Asia Pacific Region.
  66. 2015/12. The second edition of “Clinical Handbook for Adult Immunization” was published.
  67. 2016/02. The indigenized textbook “Family Medicine” celebrated the publication of its fourth edition.
  68. 2016/03. A new version of World Family Doctor Day poster was designed and distributed, for the fifth time, to celebrate the special occasion.
  69. 2016/05/15. The sequel of “The Day of a Family Doctor” had its premiere. In response to the critical acclaim the first film received in 2014, the Association filmed the sequel with its focus shifting to highlight the “everywhere” dedication of family doctors. No matter it is a hustle-and-bustle metropolis, a seaside fishing village, a remote and mountainous township, everywhere in Taiwan, there are family doctors dedicating themselves to providing residents with patient-centered, whole-person care.
  70. 2016/06. Professor Chiu, Tai-Yuan, TAFM honorary president, was elected the president (11th terms) of Taiwan Medical Association.
  71. 2016/06. TAFM President Lee, Meng-Chih was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Professional Service by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for his active promotion of the community-based integrated health care delivery system, family physician integrated care plan, and healthcare services for underprivileged minorities.
  72. 2016/07/09. The Association celebrated its 30th anniversary by hosting a jubilee entitled “Thirty Years’ Glory, Family Doctors Go!” at the landmark Grand Hotel in Taipei City and by announcing its TAIWAN Family Medicine Action Plan.
  73. 2016/12/12. The Association received from the Institute of Biotechnology and Medicine the SNQ (Symbol of National Quality—Safety and Quality) certificate with its “Good Doctors Next Door and Guardian Angels of Family Health: Family Physician Integrated Care Plan.”
  74. 2017/05/14. The Association hosted the award presentation ceremony for the winners of its “Quality Images of Family Physicians” short film competition in celebration of the 519 World Family Doctor Day.
  75. 2017/07. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (14th term) with Professor Hwang, Shinn-Jang elected the president of the Association.
  76. 2017/11/30. The Association hosted a press conference-cum-award presentation ceremony announcing the election of its honorary president Professor Chiu, Tai-Yuan as a WONCA APR Five-Star Doctor.
  77. 2017/12/7~10. The Association took part in 2017 Medical Technology Expo organized by the Institute of Biotechnology and Medicine at Taipei World Trade Center Nankang Exhibition Hall, hosting the “Healthcare Pavilion” and the seminar “Good Doctors Next Door—Family Physicians Care about You.”
  78. 2018/04 Second edition of “Preventive Medicine” was published.
  79. 2018/07 The TAFM website was updated to RWD (responsive web design) to facilitate optimal browsing experiences by automatically re-sizing our website to fit into the displays of all devices (Windows/MAC/Android/IOS desktops, laptops, tablets, and cell phones).
  80. 2018/10 TAFM Honorary President Lee, Meng-Chih and Director Chang, Bih-Jeng (Brian) were re-elected respectively the president and honorary secretary of WONCA Asia Pacific Region.
  81. 2018/10 Head of TAFM Committee of Public Relations and WONCA Affairs Tsai, Shih-Tzu (Steve) was re-appointed as lead member of World WONCA Nominating and Awards Committee.
  82. On 2019/3/29 at the National Central Library Ceremony for Annual Academic Impact Journal Awards, the TAFM Family Medicine and Primary Medical Care was honored with an Influential Periodical Award, ranking with 9 other academic journals as the Top 10 most frequently retrieved periodicals in Taiwan in 2018.
  83. On 2019/5/19, TAFM joined force with Old Five Old Foundation at the grand hall of the Taipei Main Station to celebrate the global 519 World Family Doctor Day with great rejoice, centering on the theme of “Family Doctors—Caring for You for the Whole of Your Life.” To further promote the family doctor system, highlights of this year’s celebration included the award ceremony for Outstand General Practice and Service and Outstanding Teaching Contribution of General Practitioners and experiential booths providing health counsel and inviting participants to play a series of prize-for-winner, breaking-through-barricade games.
  84. 2019/6/13~14. The Conference on Cross-Strait Exchange of General Practice Education and Training was held in Quan Zhou, Fu Jian Province from June 13 to 14, 2019 with the attendance of a TAFM delegation led by vice presidents Long-Teng Lee and Chin-Chuan Shih and committee chairmen Ching-Yu Chen and Wen-Chien Hsieh.
  85. 2019/9/19~22. TAFM President Shinn-Jang Hwang was invited to attend the 6th Conference on General Practice hosted by Chinese Medical Association in Xian, Shaanxi Province from September 19 to 22, 2019 and successfully marketed family medicine of Taiwan with a speech entitled The Development and Challenges of Family Medicine in Taiwan.
  86. 2020/08. The board of directors and supervisors underwent re-election (15th term) with Professor Hwang, Shinn-Jang re-elected as the president of the Association.
  87. 2020 TAFM Spring Conference, scheduled to be held at Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital on March 15, 2020, was cancelled in support of the government’s COVID-19 containment measures.
  88. 2020/3/19-22. The 7th Cross-Strait Conference on General Practice, hosted by the General Practice Branch of Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association and scheduled to be held in Wuhan City of Hubei Province from March 19 to 22, 2020, was cancelled in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
  89. 2020/4/22-26. The WONCA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference 2020, scheduled to be held in Auckland, New Zeland from April 22 to 26 was cancelled in reaction against the COVID-19 outbreak.
  90. 2020/5/19. TAFM switched the celebration of the 2020 World Family Doctor Day (May 15) from the planned physical venue (grand hall of the Taipei Main Station) to print media in support of the government’s COVID-19 containment efforts. The theme of the World Family Doctor Day this year—Family Doctors on the Front Line: First in, Last out—highlighted the challenges and responsibilities, as well as the unwavering dedication, of family physicians amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic. Posters were released on May 14 with their electronic versions posted online for download.
  91. 2020/8/2. Professor Hwang, Shinn-Jang was re-elected as the president (15th term) of the Association.
  92. 2020/8/27-29. The 7th Cross-Strait Conference on General Practice, hosted by the General Practice Branch of Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association, after rescheduling, was held in Shanghai from August 27 to 29. 2020. TAFM joined colleagues in China via video conferencing. President Hwang, Shinn-Jang was invited to present a speech as the conference honored guest, and Professor Lee, Meng-Chih, WONCA Asia Pacific Region president, chaired the 3rd online forum of the conference on “The Development of Family Medicine in Taiwan.” Also, TAFM colleagues invited to speak at the conference were TAFM managing director Lin, Ming-Nan; Director Brian Chang; committee chairperson Wu, Chih-Hsing, committee chairperson Hsieh, Wen-Chin; and secretary general Sun, Wen-Jung.
  93. 2020/10/24-25. The 18th Annual Meeting of Chinese General Practice Association and the Chinese Medical Association College of General Practitioners was held in Zhengzhou of Henan Province from October 24 to 25 2020. TAFM joined colleagues in China via video conferencing with Professor Hwang, Shinn-Jang (TAFM president) and Professor Lee, Meng-Chih (president of WONCA Asia Pacific Region) invited as keynote speakers respectively on “Family Physician and Preventive Healthcare: Guardians of Public Health” and “First in, Last Out: Family Doctors amidst and after COVIE-19 Outbreak.”
  94. 2020/11/25-29. The 23rd WONCA World Conference, scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi from November 25 to 29 2020, was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic.
  95. 2020. TAFM committee chairperson Dr. Steve Shih-Tzu Tsai won the 2020 WONCA Asia Pacific Five-Star Doctor Award. Representing the WONCA recognition of excellence in health care among its most outstanding members. Regional winners are forwarded for consideration by the WONCA Nominating and Awards Committee for the Global Five-Star Doctor Award.
  96. 2020. Professor Meng-Chih Lee, TAFM honorary president, was awarded the Fellowship of WONCA Awarded. The fellowship is WONCA’s most prominent award bestowed upon individuals rendering outstanding service to the WONCA organization.
  97. TAFM operation remained active and unscathed by the COVID-19 epidemic by implementing flexible hours and remote work plans for staff members and conducting weekly association affair meetings in the form of video conference. 2021 Spring Conference and Annual Academic Seminar were successfully held online through real-time live streaming plus the unprecedented arrangement of offering video classes for replay, both of which were warmly received and immensely recognized by TAFM members.
  98. The TAFM Medicity Platform was developed in collaboration with LINE Corporation to provide members with instant access to TAFM news and information. In September 2022, TAFM ended its collaboration with Medicity. In the place of the removed Medicity platform, an official TAFM LINE account has been established to facilitate members’ access to the association’s news, information, and online discussions by simply keying in “@553uffto.”
  99. In compliance with the government’s instruction against large public gathering in the time of COVID-19, physical celebration of 2021 World Family Doctor Day was reorganized into a roundtable symposium in the form of Facebook live broadcast held on May 16.
  100. TAFM Director Dr. Brian Chang elected Honorary Treasurer (2021~2023) of WONCA Asia Pacific Region (APR).
  101. Chairman of TAFM Young Doctors Committee Dr. Chang, Ping-Hsun elected Treasurer of the Young Doctors’ Movements, WONCA APR.
  102. TAFM was appointed by Centers for Disease Control to implement the Plan for Promoting Professional Service Quality of Sexual Health Clinics, working in collaboration with Bluepigeon Medical Podcast to spread sexual health knowledge through vivid and interesting interactive videos (with number of clicks exceeding 430,000).
  103. The Council Meeting of WONCA Asia Pacific Region was successfully held online on November 13, co-chaired by Professor Lee, Meng-Chih (former WONCA APR president) and Dr. Brian Chang (former WONCA APR honorary secretary and newly elected CFO) with the full participation of a TAFM delegation led by president Professor Hwang, Shinn-Jang, together with Dr. Tsai, Shih-Tzu (chairperson, TAFM Committee of Public Relations and WONCA Affairs), Dr. Chang, Hsien-Cheng (TAFM director), and Dr. Chang, Ping-Hsun (chairperson, TAFM Young Doctor Committee).
  104. TAFM delegation attended the WONCA Council Meeting held in Abu Dhabi from November 19 to 21, led by president Professor Hwang, Shinn-Chang in the company of Professor Lee, Meng-Chih (honorary president of TAFM), Dr. Tsai, Shih-Tzu, (chairperson, TAFM Committee of Public Relations and WONCA Affairs), Dr. Tsai, Yu-Cherng (vice chairperson, TAFM Committee of Public Relations and WONCA Affairs), Dr. Chang, Hsien-Cheng (TAFM director), and Dr. Chang, Ping-Hsun (chairperson, TAFM Young Doctor Committee). For the 23rd World Conference of Family Doctors, held online from November 22 to 27, 2021, TAFM ranked among the top in terms of participation with a total of 92 members attending virtual seminars of the conference, sharing their insights on the main theme of “Together, We Own the Future.”
  105. To raise the public understanding of the family physicians system and the practice of family medicine, as well as to help healthcare professionals and medical students better recognize family medicine, TAFM introduced Part III of its promotion video “The Day of a Family Doctor.”
  106. July 2022 saw TAFM publish the updated editions of three of its flagship text books: Family Medicine (5th edition), the Manual of Clinical Family Medicine (5th edition), and Preventive Medicine (3rd edition).
  107. On May 19, TAFM celebrated the 2022 World Family Doctor Day by designing a “Family Doctors, Always There to Care” poster for members’ download, and a mini health promotion campaign in the form of a group hike to Junjian Yan (aka Battleship Rock) Trail in Beitou District of Taipei City was organized on May 21 as a further token of celebration.
  108. The 9th Cross-Strait Conference on General Practice of the General Practice Branch of Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association and the Academic Network Week of Chinese General Practice Association were held in Nanjing China from November 24 to December 4, 2022 in the form of online forum. In addition to President Shinn-Jang Hwang, TAFM representatives, including Honorary President Meng-Chih Lee, Executive Deputy Secretary General Hsiang-Ho Lee, Director Brian Chang, Supervisor Chyi-Feng Jan, and Dr. Liang-Ta Tseng, were invited to speak at the conference promoting the TAFM’s Taiwan experience to the audience.
  109. President Shinn-Jang Hwang led a TAFM delegation to attend the WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Conference held in Bali, Indonesia from December 5~7, 2022. Taiwan Night was held on December 4 to meet with important members of the Asia-Pacific and World Family Physician Organizations.
  110. TAFM Director Dr. Brian Chang was elected WONCA Asia Pacific Regional President-elect on December 5, 2022, scheduled to officially assume office in 2023.
  111. Professor Meng-Chih Lee, TAFM Honorary President, was awarded the WONCA Asia Pacific Regional Five-Star Doctor Award in the opening ceremony of WONCA APR Conference held in Bali, Indonesia on December 6, 2022. And moving forward to become the region’s nominee for WONCA Global Five-Star Doctor.

President Hwang, Shinn-Jang and convener of the board of supervisors Shih, Chin-Chuan led a TAFM delegation to attend the 10th Cross-Strait Conference on General Practice, hosted by the General Practice Branch of Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, from April 13 to 16, 2023, sharing Taiwan’s achievements and experiences in the field of family medicine.

In celebration of the 519 World Family Doctor Day, TAFM collaborated with Consumers’ Foundation to publish a special World Family Doctor Day issue in the Consumer Reports of Taiwan in May 2023. The thematic chapters include primary care, vaccination, preventive healthcare, obesity and weight management, elderly health issues, and end-of-life care, highlighting the crucial roles of family physicians in safeguarding citizens’ health and promoting their awareness and understanding of family medicine.
  114. TAFM published in July 2023 the Clinical Manual for Home-based Medical Care to promote practical experiences in home care.
  115. The first Cross-Strait Online Training Course on Core Competencies of Backbone General Practitioners was held from July 20 to 31, 2023.
  116. Dr. Huang, Cheng Kuo was elected the president (16th term) of TAFM.
  117. Chairman of TAFM Public Relations & WONCA Committee Cheng, Shao-Yi and Secretary General Sun, Wen-Jung were invited to present speeches at the Taiwan-Japan-Korea Tripartite International Symposium hosted by the Korean Academy of Family Medicine in Gwangju, Korea on September 23, 2023.
  118. Professor Chiu, Tai-Yuan was awarded the WONCA Honorary Life Direct Individual Members on October 28, 2023. The award recognizes significant contributions to primary care and family medicine on a global scale, and Professor Chiu is the first recipient of the honor in the field of family medicine in Taiwan, a well-deserved recognition and a genuine cause of celebration.
  119. President Huang, Cheng-Kuo led in person a TAFM delegation to attend the WONCA World Conference held in Sydney, Australia, from October 23 to 29. On behalf of the association, President Huang presented the Taiwan Family Medicine Research Award at the WONCA Awards Ceremony. In addition, the delegation attended the conference with the grave responsibility of bidding for the hosting rights of the 26th WONCA World Conference in 2027 against competitors the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, and Hong Kong. While the winner of the highly competitive bidding went to South Africa, the TAFM delegation received international acclaim for its outstanding performance, garnering rewarding experiences and profound international friendship that have laid a solid foundation for future bidding attempts.
