This paper reports on the "Symposium on Recent Progress in Family Medicine in the Asia-Pacific Region" held during the 2025 WONCA (World Organization of Family Doctors) WorldConference in Lisbon. It reviews the current development, challenges, and innovations incommunity care across six countries/regions—Australia, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, thePhilippines, and Indonesia—to serve as a strategic reference.
The key progress of each nation is summarized as follows: Australia possesses a maturesystem but faces health workforce shortages and financial pressures; it is currently promoting valuebasedfunding, digital transformation, and the expansion of the Medicare budget. Mainland China isimplementing family doctor contract services to increase primary care utilization, though it faceschallenges regarding quality consistency and regional disparities. Taiwan has demonstrated highqualitypalliative care and international influence through legal frameworks protecting patientautonomy; however, there is still room for improvement in non-cancer care and manpowerdistribution. Japan, in response to a super-aging society, is dedicated to promoting the "CommunitybasedIntegrated Care System" within a "30-minute living radius" and interdisciplinary teamtraining. The Philippines and Indonesia are both leveraging national legislation (such as theUniversal Health Care Act and the Health Law of 2023) to strengthen the central role of familyphysicians in the community, while striving to improve training systems and address the inequitabledistribution of medical resources. Finally, this paper synthesizes these international experiences toprovide insights for the future development of family medicine in Taiwan.
