Vitamin B12 Deficiency Presenting as Dysgeusia:A Case Report

Vitamin B12 deficiency presents with a wide range of clinical manifestations, most of whichare nonspecific. For high-risk populations, long-term follow-up and appropriate vitamin B12supplementation can improve patients’ quality of life. We report the case of a 66-year-old male witha history of gastric cancer and total gastrectomy who presented to the family medicine outpatientdepartment with dysgeusia. Examination revealed flattened papillae and erythematous patches onpartial areas of the dorsal tongue surface. Upon evaluation, he was diagnosed with atrophic glossitiscaused by vitamin B12 deficiency. After vitamin B12 supplementation, his clinical symptomsimproved significantly. We hope this can will help heighten clinicians’ diagnostic sensitivity tovitamin B12 deficiency in high-risk populations.
