For promoting the awareness of the importance of knowledge communication and delivery through academic publications, the National Central Library (NCL) in Taiwan presents annual Academic Impact Awards to outstanding theses, dissertations, and academic journals selected based on the document retrieval statistics of the NCL academic resource databases, notably the National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan, Taiwan Citation Index: Humanities and Social Sciences, and PerioPath: Index to Taiwan Periodical Literature Systems. Every year, outstanding academic works published by universities, academic societies, professional associations, and technical, vocational, and research institutes are recognized and honored for their academic impact as the models in their respective fields.

The NCL Academic Impacts incorporate “Outstanding Academic Communication Award,” “Academic Hot Topic Award,” “Outstanding Academic Impact Award,” and “Outstanding Academic Contribution Award” for academic theses and dissertations. Popular and influential periodicals, on the other hand, are presented “Influential Periodical Award,” “Outstanding Knowledge Communication Award,” “Outstanding Knowledge Impact Award,” and “Outstanding Knowledge Contribution Award.”

In 2019, the TAFM Family Medicine and Primary Medical Care issued by TAFM is honored with an Influential Periodical Award, ranking together with 9 other academic journals and reviews as the Top 10 most frequently retrieved (both in-house at NCL and online) periodicals in Taiwan in the previous year, and is the only listed clinical medicine journal.
